Deadline: 31st January 2021
Netflix Documentary Talent Fund for next generational Film Makers in the UK
Netflix gives creative freedom to writers and directors to tell the stories they want to tell, unrestricted by time and form. We believe that great stories can come from anyone, anywhere – and that viewers want to see their lives reflected on screen. That’s why Netflix is excited to announce this Documentary Talent Fund to find the next generation of filmmakers.
Have you always fancied yourself behind the camera? Are you a film student? Have you got a burning idea that needs to be shown to the world? Did you train in filmmaking but then life got in the way? Then this is the opportunity for you. Whether you’ve picked up a camera before or have limited experience, do not be shy. The Documentary Talent Fund is designed to guide you through every step of the way: to nurture and encourage.
The opportunity will be open to anyone across the UK and will give ten filmmakers, and their teams, the chance to make a short documentary film with a budget of between £20,000 and £40,000 each. All teams will be under the guidance of Netflix and other filmmaking professionals, to ensure that the final films are the best they can possibly be, and in a bid to open doors to those most under-represented in the industry.
In their finished forms, each documentary must be between 8-12 minutes long and will live on Netflix UK’s social channels, with the potential for further development in the future. The brief for these fully funded short documentaries is “Britain’s Not Boring And Here’s A Story.”
We want to encourage anyone with a great story to tell, to go for it. We are on the hunt for the bravest, wittiest, most surprising stories out there and we can’t wait to see what you’ve got!
The final docs will be launched in January 2022, and we will showcase them at an event attended by industry figures to hopefully help our talent expand their networks and advance their careers. Each team will own and retain their own copyright throughout the process.
How to Apply for Netflix Documentary Talent Fund
Applications will open on the 4th January 2021 via this website www.netflixdocfund.co.uk. They will close on the 31st January 2021.
You will be required to submit a logline (one sentence); a short synopsis and creative statement about your documentary idea. We will also ask for details about any team you may have in place and any previous experience (not essential!) and also why you want to make this film.
We hope you’ll get your thinking caps on over the Christmas break. If you are shortlisted you will be invited to submit a video and the very best 10 ideas will be invited to make a short documentary.
You must be a UK resident to apply. Only one application will be accepted per person.
