Does NSFAS Fund Sol Plaatje University (SPU) Courses

NSFAS News Are you attending Sol Plaatje University or you’re planning to in the future? Trying to figure out how you’re going to pay your fees? Here’s whether you’ll be covered by the NSFAS bursary.

Figuring out how you’re going to pay your fees is an important step in planning your studies. For many, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is the first place to look. Today, we answer the question: will NSFAS cover my courses at Sol Plaatje University (SPU)?

SPU is one of the 26 public Universities in South Africa. With NSFAS including the 26 public Universities in who it funds, that means that yes, you will be funded.

The NSFAS bursary will cover both your registration and your tuition fees so you won’t have to worry about any finances when you start. This bursary will also cover the following:

  • Accommodation
  • Transport
  • Books and other learning materials
  • Meals
  • Living costs

NSFAS provides funding to students from disadvantaged families and it funds studies from most academic programmes. This means that if your household income comes to less than R350 000 per year, you are then eligible to be funded by NSFAS.

Should you be living with a disability, the household income threshold is then R600 000.

It is important that you’ve applied to SPU already when you apply for NSFAS funding or you won’t get funded.

If you’re a SASSA grant beneficiary, you will automatically be funded.

NSFAS applications open every year during August/September and close in November/December.

Should you receive the bursary, you will need to:

  • Comply with all academic requirements as set by institutions
  • Attend and participate in lectures, tutorials and academic support programmes as required by the institution
  • Complete all set assignments and/or tasks as required in terms of the due performance requirements of the Institution
  • Undergo all tests and examinations (written and oral) as required in terms of the due performance requirements of the institution.

NSFAS unfortunately only funds undergraduate programmes and not postgraduate qualifications.

Should you be asking whether your age is a factor, it is not and NSFAS does not have an age limit. If you meet the requirements, you will be funded.
