Deadline: 27 December 2022.

Fish & Richardson 2023 1L Diversity Fellowship Program

Fish & Richardson is pleased to announce its annual 2023 1L Diversity Fellowship Program. The program is a key component of the firm’s ongoing initiative to recruit, retain, and advance attorneys who will contribute to the diversity of the firm’s practice and the legal profession. Over 80% of our Fellowship recipients have received offers to join the firm as an associate following law school graduation.

The Fish & Richardson 1L Diversity Fellowship Program is comprised of four components:

  • A paid summer associate position in one of Fish & Richardson’s domestic offices in the summer of 2023;
  • Mentoring throughout the academic year by members of the firm;
  • Participation in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) 1L Scholars Program; and
  • Up to a $30,000 award — Fish will award $5,000 to all 1L Diversity Fellowship recipients upon completion of their 1L summer associate program with the firm; $10,000 to those returning as a 2L summer associate at Fish for the full summer program; and $15,000 to those who join the firm as an associate after law school graduation.

Eligibility

Candidates must be in good standing as a first-year law student at an ABA-accredited law school; demonstrate a record of academic and professional achievement; contribute meaningfully to diversity and inclusion through their involvements in law school or other community efforts and initiatives; and have a STEM background and sincere interest in intellectual property law at Fish & Richardson.

Application Process

Applications for the 2023 Fellowship will be accepted from November 1 through noon (ET) on December 27, 2022. Candidates must submit a completed application form and directed personal statement, in addition to their resume, undergraduate and graduate transcripts (official or unofficial), and a legal writing sample. Candidates must also rank their preferred offices and practice groups for the summer associate program. Finalists will be asked to submit their first semester law school grades. Only complete applications will be considered. Please see the application form for further instructions.

Mentoring

Each recipient will be assigned an attorney mentor. Mentors will serve as a liaison between the student and the firm and facilitate the student’s professional growth and learning. The mentoring relationship begins as soon as the Fellows have been named and continues at least through the academic year. Should the Fellow receive and accept an offer to return for a second summer, the mentoring relationship would continue for another academic year.

Monetary Award

Up to a $30,000 award — Fish will award $5,000 to 1L Diversity Fellowship recipients upon completion of their 1L summer associate program with the firm; $10,000 will be awarded to those returning as a 2L for the full summer program. An additional $15,000 will be awarded to those who join the firm as an associate after law school graduation.

Summer Associate Program

Following the first year of law school, Fellows are offered a paid summer associate position in a domestic office of the firm. These positions are part of Fish’s summer program. Candidates will provide their office preference during the application process. LCLD 1L Scholars Program Each Fish 1L Diversity Fellow is also given the opportunity to take part in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s Pipeline Initiative, the 1L LCLD Scholars Program, which includes substantive programming, mentoring, networking opportunities, and a two-day Scholars retreat.

Please join one of our Diversity Fellowship Information Sessions to meet with members of Fish’s Diversity & Inclusion Team and hear from former Diversity Fellows about their experience.
