Furthermore, the Kaduna State Government is particular about making social justice accessible for all its citizens.
Consequently, the Kaduna State Scholarship and loans Board is test running a scheme called ‘Free an Inmate’ that can allow inmates who are awaiting trial in prisons in Kaduna State and cannot afford to be represented, access to qualified lawyers.
The scheme entails interested law graduates who gain admission into the Law School to apply online for sponsorship. They will submit an essay to be scored online. Candidates who pass the essay will have sponsorship for tuition fees and upkeep for a year up to N400,000 while in the School. They will submit a letter to the Law School authorizing it to handover their call to bar certificate to the Kaduna State Scholarship and Loans Board.
Upon graduation; they will volunteer to serve in the ‘Free an Inmate’ scheme. This will involve taking up at least one case and seeing to its conclusion over a period of one year. At the beginning of every month, during the year, they shall get 15,000 naira for the previous month’s clearance certificate gotten from the Board for the logistics of the case. The maximum duration of the volunteer program is 12 monthly reports from the lawyer and 12 clearance certificate from the Board. This clearance is to show that the lawyer diligently pursued the case. Once this is done, they will get their call to bar certificate from the Board. Any case that exceeds the 12 calendar months shall be reviewed by the Board.
This scheme promises to help in no small means towards our prison decongestion. It’s is important to note that it will provide an immediate platform for training fresh lawyers and also improve their CV as persons who are passionate about giving back. Lawyers are encouraged to see this as a great oppurtunity to serve humanity, to serve the state and most importantly to be part of the Kaduna State renewal project under Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. Together we can give a new meaning to leadership, service, purpose and selflessness. We invite you on board!
