Lindau Science Journalism/Communication Grant 2020 for South Africans to attend the 70th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting
The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf), in partnership with the Department of
Science and Innovation (DSI),
is inviting a science communication specialist/science
journalist from South Africa to attend the 70th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting (LNLM) to
be held from 28 June to 3 July 2020 in Lindau, Germany.
The grant will cover a return flight and ground travel to Lindau, accommodation, and meals during the Lindau Nobel Laureates Meeting.
Eligibility
The call is open to science communication specialists/science journalists residing and
working in South Africa. Applicants should meet the following criteria:
1. South African citizenship
2. Demonstrate an active role in the dissemination of information about science in
different media platforms (TV, radio, social networks, blogs, digital media,
videography, newspapers and other forms of print media);
3. Have an interest in science, particularly Chemistry, Physics, Physiology/Medicine;
4. Be able to interview selected South African participants who will be attending the
meeting in Lindau, both during the meeting in Lindau, as well as before and after
their participation, and report (articles, blog entries, tweets);
5. Be able to interview speakers or guests attending the meeting in Lindau and
report (articles, blog entries, tweets);
6. Apply creativity to raise awareness of the LNLM in South Africa;
7. Young science communication specialists/science journalists below the age of 35
are encouraged to apply.
Deliverables
Measurable deliverables for this project will include but are not limited to:
• Producing daily articles at the LNLM
• Assist to publish at least two news articles on the 70th LNLM in the print
media
• Producing news articles suitable for use on the ASSAf and SAYAS websites
and the in the ASSAf newsletter
• Social media coverage during the LNLM on ASSAf Twitter page
• Popularisation of the Lindau Nobel Laureate Facebook Page
• Send a short proposal of other additional and creative ways to maximise
media exposure of the LNLM*
*Applicants should submit a short 1-page Proposal with a Motivation as to how they will
undertake to publicise the 70th LNLM using various media

3. Short motivation letter (why do you want to cover the 70th LNLM and why you
should be selected)
4. Your most recent publications (max. 5)

Applications received after the deadline will not be considered. The successful
applicant will be contacted by ASSAf before the end of February 2020 (and delays will
be duly communicated). The successful applicant will be required to register on the
Lindau website online portal before attending the LNLM. There will be an accreditation
process for the journalist at Lindau which will be communicated with the successful
applicant.

BACKGROUND OF THE LNLM
The unconstrained atmosphere – often referred to as the “spirit of Lindau” – distinguishes the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings from common scientific conferences. The annual meeting facilitates close interactions between the meeting attendees – on an average around 30 acclaimed Nobel Laureates and some hundreds of promising young researchers with interesting personal and scientific backgrounds. The picturesque German city of Lindau with its historic town centre situated on a small island just a few metres off the shores of Lake Constance – the near Austrian and Swiss Alps as the backdrop – provides a unique scenery for a certainly unique conference. The Lindau Meetings are about people, not about papers.
Exchanging ideas and views, posing personal questions, and making new contacts and
friends is equally important to the participants as discussing demanding scientific topics and latest research findings. With their knowledge, experience, their esteem and charisma, the Nobel Laureates serve as role models and mentors – respected and admired by the next generation of leading scientists, often seeking advice, guidance and affirmation.
Most but not all sessions, functions and events of the official programme will be open to
accredited journalists.
The discussion sessions, for instance, have always been open exclusively to laureates and young scientists in order to facilitate an unconstrained exchange of views. In contrast, all lectures and panel discussions are open to all attendees. Due to capacity limits, only small numbers of journalists may attend the science breakfasts and master classes – prior registration is compulsory.
On site at the meeting venue, the press desk is the contact point for registration, interview
arrangements, photo and film footage requests, and technical support. Especially for
accredited journalists, there will be a daily press talk. In addition, journalists are invited to a press reception for an informal get-together.
