NIGERIA HACKS COVID-19 VIRTUAL HACKATHON APPLICATION 2020 (1 million Naira Cash Prize)

NigeriahacksCOVID19 is an initiative of the National Information Technology Development Agency(NITDA) aimed at identifying and showcasing innovative technology that will contain the pandemic, cushion the effects of the pandemic, create awareness on measures to prevent the spread, engage stakeholders in discussion as well as point Nigerians to educative tools to engage with during the lockdown period.

The COVID-19 pandemic is a global crisis which is yet to be controlled. Nations are facing health and economic challenges whose impact will still be felt after the crisis is over. With countries in lock down to flatten the curve, more need to be done to support the government efforts to curtail the effects of pandemic. Nigeria Hacks COVID-19 is a series of initiatives that challenges Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora to come up with the use of innovative products/services/solutions in the following areas;

  • Educational platform to provide for out-of-school learning to primary, secondary and tertiary students.
  • Participation in existing initiatives
  • Series of hackathon challenges on Dissemination of correct and timely information , Containment of the virus spread, Idea bank for startups, Last mile medical relief for underserved communities Crowdsourcing relief m

This will be implemented in partnership with the government and private sector. Participants are allowed to express creativity within their business case and are encouraged to develop unique solutions with an emphasis on using the latest technology.

Objectives – NIGERIA HACKS COVID-19 application

 

  • Local content development and promotion through idea generation that would be developed into products and promoted for home grown solutions.
  • To challenge young talented Nigerians to produce innovative ideas on solving problems in the identified sectors in Nigeria
  • To match tech entrepreneurs with the appropriate public institution right from idea generation. Thus, guide tech entrepreneurship to provide solutions to existing problems.
  • Support the growth of innovative entrepreneurship for job creation and economic development.

 

Key Performance Indicators

The focus is to identify local problems in the fight against COVID-19 in Nigeria and provide a profound solution to them using technology for Social and Economic Development.

Requirements – NIGERIA HACKS COVID-19 application

 

  • Each participating team must bring or obtain whatever hardware and/or software they believe they need to participate (e.g. programing application, laptops, phones, etc), including any necessary chargers.
  • Individuals may register. They will be placed with a team that compliments their skills and background. Teams with female members are preferred.
  • Each team will be attached to a mentor to enable them to conclude the 48-hour hack. Three champion teams will be identified at end.
  • It is expected that teams will build working applications, proofs of concept, or prototypes, as well as presentation materials to explain, pitch, and present the application.
  • Teams can consist of two members to a maximum of three members including female.
  • All teams should have any two of the following: graphics designer, software developer, and a business developer.
  • All teams should have a team name.
  • NigeriaHacksCovid19 organisers have the right at their sole discretion to determine whether an entrant is eligible for the contest.

 

Judging Criteria 

Teams will be judged on these four criteria. Judges will weigh the criteria equally. During judging, participants should try to describe what they did for each criterion in their project.

 

  • Technology: How technically impressive was the hack? Was the technical problem the team tackled difficult? Did it use a particularly clever technique, or did it use many different components? Did the technology involved make you go “Wow”? Did teams successfully leveraging new technologies as a material component of their solution should be given preference. (I.e. machine learning, blockchain). For example, someone who uses a machine learning or blockchain solution for a non-critical component of their product will receive a lower ranking.
  • Design: Did the team put thought into the user experience? How well designed is the interface? For a website, this might be about how beautiful the CSS or graphics are. For a hardware project, it might be more about how good the human-computer interaction is (e.g. is it easy to use or does it use a cool interface?).
  • Completion:Does the hack work? Did the team achieve everything they wanted?
  • Learning:Did the team stretch themselves? Did they try to learn something new?
  • How closely does the solution align with one of the four challenge sectors?
  • Uniqueness of the solution: How novel is the solution’s approach?
  • Uniqueness of the solution: How novel is the solution’s approach?
  • Real-world application: Do you think the application developed by the participant has the potential to solve the problems in identified sectors?
