NSFAS BOARD STATEMENT ON THE NSFAS CHAIRPERSON OF THE BOARD LEAVE OF ABSENCE
Today – The Board of NSFAS met in its ordinary meeting to discuss the NSFAS state of readiness for the beginning of the 2024 academic year. The NSFAS Board Chairperson voluntarily requested the Board to consider his notice to be placed on leave of absence to enable the Board to deal with all allegations against him as contained in the recordings distributed by the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA).

The Board Chairperson took the Board of NSFAS into confidence regard the impact of these allegation against NSFAS, NSFAS beneficiaries, his person and family. These includes threats to his life and that of his family. The NSFAS Chairperson assured the Board that he has not received any financial gratification meant for his personal use, that of the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and the South Africa Communist Party.

The NSFAS Board welcomed the notice and the grounds expressed by the Board Chairperson to take a leave of absence

The Board instantly informed the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande on the notice by the NSFAS Board Chairperson. Minister Nzimande has the fiduciary responsibility to appoint the acting Board Chairperson.

The Board would like to reiterate that Mr Khosa’s leave of absence should not be interpreted as admission of guilt, however, a responsible and conscious decision to advance good corporate governance, transparency and accountability.

The Board of NSFAS resolved to immediately appoint an independent legal firm to look into the veracity of the allegations against the Board Chairperson.
The legal firm will be expected to report back to the Board within 30 days upon their appointment by NSFAS. The NSFAS Board will soon announce the independent legal firm that will conduct these investigations.
The NSFAS Board also assures all South Africans that this process will be handled with due diligence and integrity it deserves.

Furthermore, the NSFAS Board would like to assure South Africans that the Board of NSFAS will continue to work with all stakeholders within the Post School Education and Training (PSET) sector to ensure that there is a seamless and successful beginning of the 2024 academic year.

The Board will also like to report to the public that the 2024 application process is proceeding extremely well, with applications having reached the nine hundred thousand (900) mark. The NSFAS Board would like to encourage all prospective students to apply for the bursary while they are still awaiting for their final matriculation results.

The Board of NSFAS thanks the Board Chairperson, Mr Khosa on his honourable, brave and responsible decision to voluntarily take leave of absence.
Furthermore, the Board extends its gratitude to Mr Khosa’s family for having supported him throughout this difficult period.
