How NSFAS Funds TVET College Students

NSFAS Updates – The National Student Financial Aid Scheme shoulders the responsibility of ensuring that all qualifying students in the country’s public tertiary institutions are funded. Here is how this process works for students in TVET colleges.

NSFAS also funds 50 TVET colleges across the country. But how does this process work? Here is what we know, according to NSFAS.

The NSFAS wallet system is the current method used by TVET College students to obtain their allowances. On behalf of the Higher Education Department, NSFAS supervises and administers the Department’s TVET College Bursary Scheme.

For qualifying TVET students funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme covers the following expenses:

  • Registration & Tuition Fees
  • Personal Care Allowance
  • Transport Allowance
  • Accommodation Allowance

If your NSFAS student funding application is approved as a TVET college student, this how your bursary will be dispersed to you when broken down in more detail.

  • Accommodation in an urban area R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in an peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in an rural area R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from institution) R7,350 ┬áper annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

TVET college students can apply for NSFAS student funding at: Their TVET college bursary offices, Online, as well as the NSFAS head office. The application cycles are structured in the following way:

National Certificate Vocation (NC(v)), Semester 1 and Trimester 1 – Annual – online application and walk-in assistive capture application at the beginning of each year

Trimester 2 & 3 as per DHET calendar, in May and September respectively, also Walk-in assistive capture application

Semester 2 June – July walk in, assistive capture application.
