Peter McGregor HDR Supplementary Scholarship 2020 for study at the Australian National University (ANU)

Applications are open for Peter McGregor HDR Supplementary Scholarship at the Australian National University. ANU is a world-leading university in Australia’s capital city, Canberra.

The objective of the award is to reward excellence in research in the Research School of Astronomy & Astrophysics instrumentation program or excellence in research that has a substantial instrumentation component, and to encourage outstanding students to pursue PhD degree programs in astronomy and astrophysics at the ANU with a special emphasis on instrumentation development.

Astronomy and Astrophysics, with a substantial instrumentation research component.


The award is available each year to a new or continuing student who:
(a) is a domestic or an international student;
(b) is enrolled in the PhD program at RSAA and is working on a project in astronomy and
astrophysics that incorporates instrumentation development or innovative use of
instrumentation; and
(c) has completed all the required milestones to the satisfaction of the Delegated

Type – Academic

There are four types of coursework scholarships:

  • Access scholarships
  • Academic scholarships
  • Sport scholarships
  • Residential scholarships

A student can be considered for any eligible coursework scholarship; however, there are restrictions around what types of scholarships can be held concurrently as well as the total annual value of the scholarship package.

A coursework student can hold a coursework scholarship package up to a total annual value of AUD $30,000 consisting of:

  • multiple ANU Access scholarships;
  • one ANU Academic or one ANU Sports scholarship; and
  • one ANU Residential scholarship.

Students must understand the type of scholarship they are applying for or have been offered as it may affect their current ANU scholarship/s.

In the case where a student is eligible for and is awarded numerous coursework scholarships which exceed the total annual value permitted, the scholarship package will be allocated according to (in order of priority):

  1. Highest total value of combined scholarships;
  2. Highest total value within the first year of the scholarships;
  3. Longest duration of funding.

The duration of a full-time award is one year or such shorter period as is stated in
the letter of offer.

How to apply

There is no application as students are automatically considered if they meet the eligibility
criteria or conditions prescribed under the Eligibility section.

Peter McGregor HDR Supplementary Scholarship SELECTION

The scholarship is awarded on the recommendation of the Selection Committee appointed
by the Director of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. Selection is made on the basis of:
(a) originality and feasibility of the research, which should have a substantial instrumentation component;
(b) impact, or potential for impact, in the research field;
(c) research achievements and accomplishments (e.g. submitted or published refereed
papers and conference presentations); and
(d) good citizenship and engagement with RSAA and the wider community (e.g.
outreach activities and committee representation).
In making the award the Selection Committee will consider the above criteria together with
other factors such as the information provided in the Thesis Progress report (or Thesis Proposal) and Annual Progress Talk (or Proposal Talk) as necessary. The committee will take into account any program leave of absence.
The Selection Committee reserves the right to make no award if it considers there is no
eligible applicant of sufficient merit. The Selection Committee may also vary the number of
awards and/or offer the award at other times in exceptional circumstances or based on the
standard of applications (where funds allow).
