Profile of the Class of 2023

The #matricClassOf2023 has shown how dedication and resilience ultimately culminate in a dream translating into reality. Notwithstanding a myriad of challenges, these young individuals have crossed the threshold into the next chapter of their lives.

This class entered the formal schooling system in Grade 1, in January 2012. These learners are the beneficiaries of the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) that was introduced in Grade 12 in 2014 and enjoyed relative stability in their schooling career until 2020.

The DBE established a recovery programme to ensure that the learning disruptions of 2020 and 2021 are addressed. In the case of the 2023 Grade 12 cohort, the full Grade 9 and Grade 10 curricula could not be covered in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

The latter part of the Grade 11 year can be considered closest to an ordinary academic year, as all learners returned to full schooling in 2022.

In most instances, sections of the Grade 10 and Grade 11 content had to be included in subsequent Grades in 2022 and 2023.

From 2021 to 2023, learner support programmes at national and provincial levels were tailored to mitigate reduced contact time and to address learning gaps and learning losses. These interventions further attempted to improve learner performance across the system.

The DBE is proud of the Class of 2023 and their achievements. We wish them all the best for their future endeavours.
