Regulations For 2023 Online Learner Placements for Grade 1 or Grade 8

The Department of Basic Education in Gauteng has recently announced that learners entering Grade 1 or Grade 8 in 2023 who apply using the Online Admissions system will be placed according to the admissions regulations listed below.

Parents looking to ensure that their children have been placed to enrol for Grade 1 or Grade 8 in 2023 at schools located in Gauteng, have been reminded that those who applied using the GDE Online Admissions system, will receive placement as per the below admissions regulations:

  • The home address within feeder zone
  • Siblings
  • Work address (For those who applied for schools closer to work, space permitting)
  • Within a 30km Radius
  • Beyond 30km Radius

Applications are due to open from Sunday 22 July 2022, with the closing deadline set to be Friday 19 August 2022.

On Friday,28 January this year, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced that all Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners who applied through the 2022 online admissions system have been successfully placed in schools.

At the time, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) received 347 216 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 Online Admissions in 2022.

The department further confirmed that 321 768 applicants had submitted proof of residency and other essential documents, allowing the department to expedite their placements. This allowed 129 779 Grade 1 learners and 191 989 Grade 8 learners to be successfully placed.
