SASSA News Today 11th June on Non-Payment Of R350 Grant

SASSA NEWS For months, beneficiaries of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 grant have not received their money. This mainly due to a change in the legislation under which the grant is provided.

In April, the National State of Disaster came to an end, which meant that The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) could no longer provide the R350 grant under the Disaster Management Act. The grant is now provided under the Social Assistance Act.

Minister of Presidency, Mondli Gungubele has apologised on behalf of the government for the period of non-payment of grants. This comes after Sassa announced that R350 grant payments will only be processed from mid June 2022.

“This government will always fulfil whatever undertaking it has [with regards to the SRD]. If there was a period of non-payment, on behalf of this government, we will make that apology” said Gungubele.

He said that as long as those payments are due, R350 grants will be paid to beneficiaries.

Sassa also revealed that R350 grant reconsiderations from as far back as August 2021 are expected to be processed by end June 2022 and payments will then happen thereafter.

Double payments will not be made on the same day but multiple payments could be made during the same month.

The qualifying criteria for the R350 grant also changed due to the change in regulatory framework.
