SASSA SRD r350 Grant Increment Set Date

In todays latest SASSA News – South Africans who rely on Sassa social grants as their source of income recently received the good news that some social grant will increase. Here is when the increases will come into effect.

The largest budget allocation towards the Social Development Department means some Sassa social grants are set to increase following the recent 2022 budget speech delivered by Finance Minister, Enoch Godwangwana.

The child support grant will be increased by R20 to R430, old age and disability grants will increase by R95 from R1 890 to R1 985 and the war veterans grant will also see a 5% increase from R1 910 to R2 005.

The Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress grant was extended for a year. These increases are due to come into effect on 1 April 2022

While giving herĀ analysis, Director at the Centre for Social Development in Africa Professor Lauren Graham, said that she found it to be a balanced budget.

She adds that the extension of the SRD gives the government more time to determine where its income flows are going and to come up with long term solutions.

Graham further points out that the government needs to also consider the fact that the problem of poverty and inequality is multi-dimensional and systemic and to think of ways to complement income with other support services to undo many of the barriers faced by people in poverty.

She says that this is the only way that these social development interventions will be transformative.
