SONA 2022- South Africa President Extends Sassa R350 Grant

In todays latest SASSA News 2022 –  President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Thursday night that the Sassa R350 grant will be extended. This announcement, amongst others, was made during this year’s State of the Nation Address.

Good news was delivered on Thursday night as President Cyril Ramaphosa met everyone’s expectations when he announced that the Special Relief of Distress (SRD) grant would be extended.

The President said:

Mindful of the proven benefits of the grant, we will extend the R350 SRD grant for one further year until the end of March 2023.

This year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), where the President made this announcement, was focussed on rebuilding South Africa’s economy and addressing unemployment, inequality and poverty.

Government has been in deep consultations with community-based organisations where they were given insight into the dire needs within communities.

The SRD grant has provided support to over 10 million vulnerable South Africans as living and employment conditions were worsened by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ramaphosa also mentioned during his speech that Government intends to look at ways to replace the grant saying that “any further support must pass the test of our own affordability and must not come at the expense of basic services or at the risk of unsustainable spending”.
