Western Cape Human Settlements Recruitment Drive for Job Creation

The South Africa Western Cape Department of Human Settlements has began a recruitment drive to create short to medium term job opportunities and so far the drive is proving to be successful having secured employment for many individuals.

In January and February 2022 the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements (WCDoHS) set out to create short – to medium term job opportunities for 112 individuals who are over 35 years old. So far they have created 73 opportunities with 30 being in Khayelitsha, 30 in Qolweni, Plettenberg Bay and 13 in Mossel Bay.

The Department of Human Settlements is responsible for developing sustainable integrated human settlements in the Western Cape. This department constructs housing for people across the province.

Majority of the individuals who were recruited are experienced construction workers, thus making it easier for them to find employment.

The contractor at the various sites ensures that there is enough work available for at least three to six months with the possibility of an extension on these opportunities.

Western Cape MEC of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers said these job opportunities will ensure that more people become empowered through furthering their skills and obtaining new skills.

Simmers thanked the contractors saying:

I commend the contractors in the role they’re playing within the local communities. The more knowledgeable and upskilled our people become, the more they’ll be come employable. Continued job creation is a focal point for the Western Cape Government.

With the help of the Department of Labour, the respective Municipalities and the community it is said that a further 17 individuals should be recruited in Mossel Bay, and the balance for the Transhex project in the Breede Valley municipal area.
