SASSA News - Challenges Affecting Grant Payment

When is the Deadline for SASSA SRD Grant Application

SASSA latest news –  Sassa has said that the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant may be extended to March 2024. The administration is looking for a grant replacement.

The government is investigating numerous proposals for replacing the R350 incentive, but no decision has been made. The government hopes to pay for the successor by March 2024.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced the extension Wednesday. He made the statement while briefing Congress on the nation’s economic future.

Godongwana said the SRD grant was launched in May 2020 as a temporary remedy to help the most vulnerable during COVID-19 lockdowns. Multiple extensions followed. Continued debate and challenging choices about grant money.

The extension of SRD grant will slow the development of other social grants, particularly those for the aged and disabled. SRD needed internal money to continue.

The Treasury expects annual SRD grant increases of 8.8%. Treasury said the financial effects could affect citizens.

Godongwana said prolonging the grant permanently would harm society.

Despite the budget clause, a permanent extension or replacement will require permanent revenue increases, permanent spending reductions, or a mix of the two.
