Wladimir A. Smirnoff scholarships & Fellowships 2020 programme for Canadians ( $3,000)

Applications are now open for Wladimir-A.-Smirnoff scholarships and fellowships 2020. The Wladimir-A.-Smirnoff Bursaries are a joint initiative of the Société d’Enomologie du Québec (SEQ), the Société de protection des plantes du Québec (SPPQ) and Natural Resources Canada – Canadian Forest Service (NRCan – CFS) ).

This year, two scholarships will be awarded, one for the Forest Entomology component, supported by the SEQ, and the other in Forest Phytopathology, supported by the SPPQ.

  • For each component, a scholarship of $ 3,000 will be awarded to a student 1 who is pursuing graduate or postgraduate university studies in Quebec in the field of forest entomology or forest phytopathology.
  • Students have until April 13, 2020 to apply.
  • The names of the winners will be announced in May and scholarships will be available as soon as applicants register for the programs.
  • At the request of the three partners, the laureates must undertake to participate in promotional activities.

NOTE: Award winners Wladimir A. Smirnoff may apply for a second grant (maximum of two scholarships per course of study 2 e or 3 e cycle). These requests will then be assessed in the same way as those of the other candidates.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen;
  • Be a member or become a member of the Quebec Entomological Society (SEQ) or the Quebec Plant Protection Society (SPPQ). → Become a member of the SEQ or the SPPQ by clicking on the links;
  • Continue in the school year following the request for at least one session of full-time studies 2 e or 3 e cycle in a Quebec university;
  • Ensure that these studies relate to forest entomology or forest phytopathology (development of new approaches for pest control, prevention and detection, development of technologies for applying biological pesticides, improvement of knowledge of ecology and physiology of pests, development of decision support tools for pest management, etc.);
  • Be supported in your project by a research director.

Selection criteria

As an indication, here are the selection criteria that will be taken into consideration:

  • Quality of the applicant’s academic record
  • Cover letter
  • Quality and originality of the proposed project
  • Relevance and possible impact of the project
  • Contribution of the proposed research to the advancement of knowledge in the field
  • Ability of the candidate to carry out his project
  • Logistical and financial feasibility of the project

Attach an annex identified  Research work experience . It should include the following:

  • Position held
  • Description of tasks
  • Workplace
  • Contact details of the immediate supervisor
  • Hiring period
  • Letters of support from the research director and an immediate supervisor, relating to work experiences, in order to illustrate the candidate’s ability to carry out his project. The research director’s letter of support must certify that the student is registered full-time.

Attach an identified annex  Description of the research project . It should include the following:

  • Description of the project (4 pages maximum)
  • Work plan, timetable and research budget
  • Institution attended as part of the project
  • Contact details of the research director
  • Contact details of co-directors or scientific partners
