The Write Project Film Fund 2021 for African Filmmakers (Funding up to $5 million)

Call for submission –The Write Project Film Fund. The Write Project Film Fund was created for the specific purpose to promote the development and production of professionally produced filmed entertainment in Africa for exhibition internationally.

The Write Project Film Fund is a subsidiary of PSP Media Capital which is spearheaded by its Managing Director Brian Wu. It’s a next-generation global media finance company that is backed by multiple angel investors based in Los Angeles, California; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Hong Kong, China; and Cape Town, South Africa.

Submission of applications is now open for the following eligible projects:

  • Feature Films
  • Short Films (Scripts & Concepts)
  • Documentaries (Scripts & Treatments)
  • TV Series (Spec Scripts & Treatments)

Write Project Film Fund 2021 Eligibility

• We welcome applications from around Africa.
• Only complete scripts in English will be accepted.
• The project is open to all writers over the age of 16 years old.
• All material submitted to other competitions and/or grant programmes are eligible for submission.
• There are no requirements as to when the material was written.
• Material should be submitted in standard screenplay format, font, spacing and margin.
• We have no preferences regarding title page content. Title and name of writer would suffice.
• Adaptations are eligible, as long as the underlying rights are owned by the writer, director or producer or the work is in the public domain.
• Scripts must be in generally accepted industry-standard formatting as a PDF file. Any popular software may be used for formatting, such as Final Draft, Celtx, WriterDuet or Fade In.
• All material must be submitted electronically as a PDF or it will not be eligible.

Project selection is twice per year based on the following criteria: (i) originality; (ii) story structure; (iii) characterization; (iv) visual inventiveness; and (v) overall viability for world-class film festivals and/or online distribution. Entrants may be required to submit further information to assist in the Supervisory Board’s verification of eligibility. Any entrant may be deemed ineligible at the sole discretion of the Supervisory Board. We reserve the right to amend these rules at any time.

Feature Films

Whether you have a completed script or a fully packaged feature film project seeking production finance, we want to consider it for our film fund.

If your aspirations are solely to become a produced screenwriter, you can rely on The Write Project to package your script with a talented director and in-house production resources with cash financing, judged on a case-by-case basis, depending on each project’s budget and needs as determined by our Expert Committee of industry professionals.

The Write Project is offering production funding twice per year to talented filmmakers for narrative features that display originality, vision and exceptional potential.

Production funding for feature films will vary from $2,500,000 to $6,000,000 depending on the scale and merit of each project. This includes creative development from The Write Project team and production guidance and resources from associated partners.

SHORT FILMS 

We are looking for 15 – 30 aspirant filmmakers who will be offered the opportunity to develop a short-form script for production.

Whether you have a short-form script seeking production finance or just a story that has been burning inside of you, we want to consider it for our film fund.

With the rise in demand for high quality short content across new platforms and devices, and the increased industry importance placed on short filmmaking worldwide, we’re honoring the art of narrative short-form screenwriting as well as short-form documentary content.

The focus of developing short scripts is to get them produced in order to highlight the writer’s skill. The short film is considered a stepping stone to making a feature. It builds your portfolio; it showcases your style, and supercharges your career.

The Write Project is offering production funding twice per year to talented filmmakers for short films that display originality, vision and exceptional potential.

Production funding for short films will vary from $45,000 to $60,000 depending on the scale and merit of each project as determined by our Expert Committee of industry professionals. This includes creative development from The Write Project team and production guidance and resources from associated partners.

DOCUMENTARIES

Whether you have a stand-alone documentary script or a fully packaged documentary television project seeking production finance, we want to consider it for our film fund.

If your aspirations are solely to become a produced screenwriter, you can rely on The Write Project to package your script with a talented director and in-house production resources with cash financing, judged on a case-by-case basis, depending on each project’s budget and needs as determined by our Expert Committee of industry professionals.

The Write Project is offering production funding twice per year to talented filmmakers for documentary features and limited documentary series that display originality, vision and exceptional potential.

Production funding for documentary films & series will vary from $150,000 to $600,000 depending on the scale and merit of each project. This includes creative development from The Write Project team and production guidance and resources from associated partners.

TELEVISION SERIES

Whether you have a stand-alone TV pilot screenplay or a fully packaged television project seeking production finance, we want to consider it for our film fund.

If your aspirations are solely to become a produced screenwriter, you can rely on The Write Project to package your script with a talented director and in-house production resources with cash financing, judged on a case-by-case basis, depending on each project’s budget and needs as determined by our Expert Committee of industry professionals.

The Write Project is offering production funding twice per year to talented filmmakers for great drama and comedy TV pilots for cable and online streaming platforms. We also accept web series, non-traditional series pilots as well as reality television concepts that display originality, vision and exceptional potential.

Production funding for television series will vary from $750 per minute to $1500 per minute depending on the scale and merit of each project. This includes creative development from The Write Project team and production guidance and resources from associated partners.
