YIAGA Community Organizing Institute (COI) Programme for Young Civic Actors and Activists

Community Organizing Institute (COI) is formalizing and institutionalizing the annual capacity building program on community organizing for young civic actors and activists in Nigeria and the West African sub-region. COI was established after 8 successful Youth Organizing Schools (YOS) which has so far produced over 240 community organizers.

The community organizing program is designed for young men and women civic actors, activists, members of civil society and political parties in Nigeria and across the West Africa sub-region. The program will equip the participants with the requisite community organizing, political organizing, and advocacy skills needed to engage the government at different levels to influence reforms or political party officials to increase youth participation as candidates. COI will build and strengthen Yiaga Africa’s community of advocates and community organizers in West Africa.

Over the course of 5 days, the institute’s curriculum will cover specialized topics on political and community organizing, effective policy advocacy, non-violent change, scenario building, power mapping, building and maintaining networks and coalitions, building resources, gender mainstreaming, and online organizing. The institute will also strengthen the institutional and technical capacity of youth organizations in policy engagement and promotion of democratic values and principles in Africa. A detailed curriculum will be shared with successful applicants

The COI is supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), Washington DC with an aim to strengthen the leadership, technical and institutional capacities of youth activists and youth organizations in Nigeria and the West African sub-region.
